Phyto-oestrogens are chemicals that are found in some plants. They act like a weak form of oestrogen once they have been broken down by the body. There is some research which suggests they may be helpful with symptoms of the menopause such as hot flushes.
Soya products are rich in phyto-oestrogens and are apparently best for you if fermented eg. Tempura or Miso. Linseed, Red Clover, and Black Cohosh also contain plant phyto-oestrogens. All of these can be taken in supplement form. Soya and Linseed can be added to the diet, however Linseeds need to be ground for the body to gain any benefit.
